nationalnightout08.gifTuesday night, August 5th, North Little Rock neighborhoods will be celebrating National Night Out across the City. The program is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness, support local anti-crime programs, strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships, and to send a message to criminals that local communities are organized and taking steps to combat local crime.

The National Night Out program is celebrating it's 25th anniversary this year and it's activities have greatly expanded over the years. What started with keeping front porch "light's on" and front porch vigils has expanded to block parties, cookouts, and police visits among others. So Tuesday night turn on your porch lights and come down to your local neighborhood celebration.

Why don't they do these during a cooler time of the year? And how much does the city dole out for these?

Why not give that money to the neighborhood groups to do their own thing? I noticed, and I agree with, that the Levy Improvement Movement opted not to participate because of the oppressive heat.

Thanks.

I'm not positive, but I think most of the money comes from the National Association of Town Watch (NATW), which in turn is funded by Target and the Bureau of Justice Assistance. Not to say that NLR doesn't spend any money, I think they provide some supplies like chairs and whatnot, but the cost is minimal.

Given that it's a national program it's date is supposed to be fixed, although just this year Texas got permission to delay it's celebration to October 7th. Maybe Arkansas can try to work out a similar deal next year.

Interesting side note - Apparently there are rumors that the guy who runs NATW, a non-profit org., makes almost $300,000/yr.

I vote for Springtime! Late March maybe on a Saturday night and then a big city wide "picnic in the Park" on Sunday afternoon.
