The City apparently has a deal to sell the old Baptist Hospital site in Baring Cross to America Diamond LLC led by Russell Huckaby of Little Rock.  The City will sell the the hospital buildings and 40 acres of land for $200,000.  A 2006 appraisal indicated the land alone was worth $1,600,000 or $40,000 per acre.  The estimated cost for the building asbestos removal was $1,500,000. Possible uses for the site include dense residential, or lower density residential, mixed use or corporate office park.  The agreement to sell the buildings and land will be presented the City Council August 25th for their approval.

Despite all the problems caused by asbestos, it is still not banned in the U.S. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the U.S. imported and used an estimated 1,820 tons in 2007. The U.S. House of Representatives is considering a bill to ban asbestos (it is already banned in 40 countries) and to provide funding for medical research so effective treatment can be found for asbestos-related diseases. Please tell your representative to support the bill.

Perhaps once the deal closes the developers will 'flip' it to the Cherokees from OK to make it into the 'Trail of Tears' casino resort and bring some 'well paying jobs' and economic development to town! In the meantime, what's going to happen to the plans for the PAL Haunted House for Halloween?
