Dogtown Wire is asking residents of North Little Rock to become citizen journalists for what we want to be a true grassroots community newspaper and discussion site. We are not going to pretend we can do it all. We are reaching out to the residents of the city to be true stakeholders in this news site if they want to make a difference. You can be a part of the “we” in changing the way city issues are presented, and how the public becomes engaged in conversation about its issues. As a citizen journalist you will join the growing ranks of town and city residents across the country who are becoming an integral part of independent, electronically published local newspapers. Eventually each correspondent develops what is called in his or her own “voice;” their own writing style that becomes identifiable to the reader. You will be encouraged to develop your own voice to bring diversity to the stories in the paper. We do not want every story to be of a boring homogenized style. The hard news stories on city spending, police and crime, a local fire and others are important, but what you want to write about can come in many forms. Feature stories on interesting people, events, businesses, organizations and groups, and sports in and around the city’s varied neighborhoods, are as important. Though a news source can come close to knowing a little bit about everything in a city, can they really know your neighborhoods and neighbors – what is in your backyard – better than you? This can be your newspaper and you get to help take it where and what it can be. If you see an important story in the city or your neighborhood and have the time and inclination to dig in – get your hands dirty and investigate it. Bring the facts as you find them and we will work together to put it out to the public. Together, as readers and writers, we can make the Dogtown Wire successful in making change happen by bringing about a new way to view our city. It’s up to us.
