lightsofbroadway.jpgFour students from the North Little Rock School District were recently selected to participate in the Arkansas Repertory Theatre's Summer Musical Theatre Intensive (SMTI) program.

The four are Cassidy Ratliff and Laura Leigh Turner from Indian Hills, as well as Kennedy Sample and Maddie Harrington from Crestwood.

The program is designed for motivated young people who are serious about the arts, specifically musical theatre.

Celebrating its third year in 2007, the SMTI program offers young actors the opportunity to learn professional techniques designed to enhance their acting, vocal and dance skills in a comprehensive two-week curriculum.

Participants perform language and movement exercises, learn choreography and musical selections, attend regular daily rehearsals and star in a public musical theatre performance on The Rep’s main stage. This year the summer musical is called, "If You Sing It, They Will Come" (songs from the silver screen). There were over 300 talented young artists that auditioned for 40 spots.

There will be a matinee at 1:00 p.m. and night performance at 7:00 p.m. on August 2, 2008 at The Rep.

wallstreet.jpg Stephen Hu and Catherine A. Woodrow, both ninth grade students at North Little Rock High School East Campus, recently scored better than 34,500 other students from around the United States in the National Financial Literacy Challenge.

Both Stephen and Catherine scored in the 25th percentile in the first ever event sponsored by the U.S. Department of Treasury and recommended by the President's Advisory Council on Financial Literacy.

Participants included students in rural areas, suburbs, and cities in this country, and in Department of Defense schools around the world. The Office of Financial Education in the U.S. Department of the Treasury writes...

"These honors will hopefully inspire other students and teachers to focus on financial education. We encourage you to keep exposing your students to these important topics. The President's Advisory Council on Financial Literacy has recommended that Treasury offer the Challenge as a means of reinforcing the many financial education programs currently available for high school students. We expect to offer the Challenge again in October 2008. The Challenge's 35 questions will again be correlated to the 2007 national standards published by the JumpStart Coalition for Personal Financial Literacy."

Dinah Allen, Gifted Facilitator at Lakewood Middle and Rose City Middle Schools was recognized at the annual AGATE (Arkansans for Gifted and Talented Education) Conference in February as one of the five Arkansas Gifted Educators of the Year.  This recognition was for her outstanding service to gifted students in the North Little Rock School District, primarily for her Lunch Bunch Program. It is for gifted and talented underachievers: bright children with high test scores but with little school success. Dinah meets with them weekly and includes their parents and special guests to help motivate them. She counsels them as well and works to change the pattern from underachiever to achiever. Her primary concern for gifted students is at the social and emotional level and that what this program is about. Dinah also coaches a Quiz Bowl team and works with the Duke University Scholars Recognition Program.

Read further for a brief description of Allen's program and  support for it.

The Honorable Patrick H. Hays,

Each year, I like to provide you with a summary of how well our students are doing who are enrolled in the television production classes. This year was a banner year for NLRTV.

At the annual Arkansas Scholastic Press Association competition held in Rogers, Ark. NLRTV once again took the top award, The All-Arkansas Award for Broadcasting.

This is the seventh time NLRTV has won this in the 10-year history of the award.

They also won superiors (the highest award) in feature package, sports package, sports coverage, graphics, daily news, and commercial. The feature for Habitat for Humanity took an excellent rating.
